What is granite?

Granite is an igneous rock (formed out of molten rock) that is mainly comprised of quartz and feldspar. Naturally, it usually comes in red, pink, grey or white colours with dark mineral grains. When it comes to commercial stone, granite usually refers to any crushed, crystalline stone with visible, interlocking grains and is distinctly different to marble.

What is granite used for?

Granite is most used in interior and exterior design for its durability, strength, heat resistance and stain resistance. You don’t need to take our word for it – many famous buildings are made from granite like Mount Rushmore, the Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Fountain, many ancient pyramids (including in the Pyramid of Giza) and the Cairn of Barnenez.

Nowadays, we don’t have to be making a monument to use granite. We use granite in everything from walls to pavers, ceiling to floor. While we do still use raw, polished granite, we also use a lot of composite granite that is made from a mix of granite and quartz stone dust and acrylic resin.
